Chapter Twelve
My next assignment ended up being more training. Ugh. Three days later I sat beside Angelo’s bed and had my answer. I couldn’t stay here. Not when the Director had already talked to me yesterday about another case and in a few days, a tribunal would be assembled to pass judgment on Stormguard. Something didn’t quite sit with me. I’d brought him in and saved the future, right? If so, then why did he act as if we’d stepped right into the middle of his grand trap? He was too gleeful at being caught, and I feared we’d tripped a Deadman’s switch at some point in the future. Gianrossi wanted nothing to do with the discussion. If that were her management style, I hated it. My old boss had listened to me, understood my hunches panned out more often than not. That she didn’t trust me, or maybe just penalized me for what happened to Angelo, made me want to stay even less.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered to the sleeping Angelo. “I’ve got to go.” It’d probably cost me my position here at Tempus and most likely cost me my magic. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t.
His eyelids flickered and I hoped he’d heard me. I stood and left his room, passing the technician in the hall. He didn’t even acknowledge my passing. Good, the more invisible I was, the better off I’d be. Once in my office, I grabbed a small pack, I’d brought from home. I’d packed it with a few things, some clothes, my Kindle, a picture of my parents from happier times. I tucked my badge and a small plastic star trophy, horribly cheesy, that my old boss had given me for cracking a difficult case. Then, I slid a mint into my mouth and set my chronometer. Goodbye cruel world or something like that.
The colors swirled around me and I found no joy in them. When solid ground materialized beneath my feet, I paused for a moment, then took off my chronometer and stuffed it in my pack. They might still be able to trace me here, and I wasn’t quite ready to give up that link. I rounded the corner from the alley where I’d arrived and walked up to the hostel.
Something had changed. The doorman frowned as he opened the door, and inside the bustle of people and activity appeared more frantic. I still had my key card and had returned only an hour or so after I’d left with Stormguard, so I went up to my room, which appeared unchanged and sat down. A light blinked on the console.
I touched the console and Akendo’s face appeared. How could he have left me a message? He hadn’t had enough time to process the three men. I frowned and hit play.
“Agent Kwan, if you are seeing this then you’ve come back. Go. Now. While you still can. The time instances are changing. I think Stormguard set up magic bombs to destroy the portals through which we travel because we have agents stranded throughout time.
